L carnitine weight loss or Acetyl-l-carnitine weight loss supplements?
Carnitine (and L-carnitine) is an amino acid. L carnitine weight loss supplements are touted to increase metabolism. But, do they really? Whether yes or no, do they do anything else for weight loss to make l carnitine weight loss supplements “legit?” I’ll give you all the answers. Then, you can make your own decision about whether or not to purchase l carnitine weight loss supplements for your diet plan.
Carnitine is an amino acid naturally produced by the body in the liver and kidneys. It is stored primarily in the skeletal muscles, brain and heart. It helps the body break down fat and turn it into energy. Reading that perks you up, doesn’t it? We’ll go into that in more depth of course.
Carnitine carries fats from the outer region of our cells into the tiny energy-makers called mitochondria. In the mitochondria, fat and glucose break down to make ATP. ATP is basically what the body uses for energy. Acetyl L Carnitine is an acetylated version of L-Carnitine. Acetyl-L-carnitine can enter the brain where the acetyl group helps form acetylcholine, an important cognition neurotransmitter.
Back to the l carnitine vs. acetyl-l-carnitine discussion. L-carnitine converts into a substance called trimethylamine (TMA) when it hits your stomach. When it gets to your liver, the TMA is processed into trimethylamine-N-oxide, or TMAO.
There is strong proof TMAO causes plaque to buildup in your arteries. Therefore, it can lead to atherosclerotic heart disease and cerebral vascular disease. So, in my opinion, there is no earthly reason to purchase l carnitine weight loss supplements which I see advertised right and left. If you want this helpful amino acid, get acetyl l carnitine each and every time.
The first way Acetyl-l-carnitine does help with weight loss:
So, I’ve gotten right to the “punch” here, and now I’ll explain how it works. Notably, if you were to purchase just plain l-carnitine weight loss supplements, they would also work. However, after reading the warning above, I think you will get the message “plain old” l carnitine weight loss supplements are just plain bad news. I’m now going to refer to acetyl-l-carnitine as ALC, okay?
They use a process called oxidation to break down fatty acids. The breakdown products then convert easily into the energy molecules called ATP. This process is one of the principal reasons ALC is in weight loss supplements. It basically forces more fatty acids (rather than carbohydrates) into the mitochondria to be used as energy.
These fats, typically, are not taken up on their own (if carbohydrates are available) unless an l-carnitine is available to transport them. This process can, therefore, help to fulfill energy needs from fat storage deposits as opposed to glucose.
This helps to stimulate the process of fat break down within the cells. The metabolic result is a slight increase in your fat (lipid) metabolism, and it improves the ability to lose weight. As an aside, menopause is a time when cortisol rises and estrogen and progesterone “leave”, setting the stage for what women often call unexplained weight gain. This is a time ALC comes in quite handy to help reverse the metabolic changes which put fat burning on the back burner. Taking ALC supplements is a definite way to lose weight during menopause.
The second way ALC assists with weight loss:
How long and hard can you work out? Do you think that improving these two things would help you lose weight? Well, your hunch is correct. The duration and intensity of your workouts depend on how well your body can use fat for energy. To explain, this basically means “how fuel-efficient is your body?” Studies show daily l-carnitine supplementation enhances fat metabolism and subsequently, performance.
One study, published in The Journal of Physiology, demonstrates that L-carnitine supplements allow the body to spare glycogen by utilizing more fat.
When this happens, the time to exercise exhaustion is then delayed. In addition, muscle lactate (acid) is reduced when performing high-intensity exercise.
To clarify, this means at high intensity (80% Vo2 max), the effects of muscle soreness are delayed by l carnitine, allowing for longer bouts of exercise. Similar results have been found in comprehensive studies from 2007 and 2009.
The third way- Acetyl L-Carnitine increases muscle mass and strength:
Acetyl-l-carnitine may improve sports performance by the mechanisms described above and more. Many athletes across different sports report acetyl-l-carnitine provides higher energy levels and better fat metabolism. Another key point about how acetyl l-carnitine helps is by reducing the levels of exercise damage. It reduces the presence of certain biomarkers which indicate the presence of damaged tissues which occur during exercise. Accordingly, here are the two ways this happens.
Increases in muscle oxygen
According to a couple of clinical studies, if you take acetyl-l-carnitine before weight training, you will increase the concentration of oxygen in your muscle tissues.
It reduces the stress of exercise:
So, what exactly does that mean?
It means that toxic metabolites of exercise performance including lactic acid are possibly reduced and/or delayed when ALC is in the picture.
Most of the clinical data that exists is from a small sample size and shows positive markers for exercise performance, but it doesn’t show whether this translates into actual performance gains or not.
Meaning we think we can improve exercise performance, but this one variable isn’t quite clear. However, many athletes swear by ALC, especially bodybuilders.
Acetyl L Carnitine for Body Building and we’ll call this #4:
Many body builders use acetyl-l-carnitine for many sports related benefits. Bodybuilders want to maximize muscle and minimize fat. This is the goal of someone seeking to lose weight, albeit on a smaller scale. Bodybuilders use ALC successfully because ALC helps burn stored fat. Additionally, it forces extra fats and fatty acids into your cellular mitochondria, allowing for even more fat burning.
This has obvious benefits for body builders “cutting up” near contest times. We don’t think of bodybuilders as people looking for weight loss, but they want to accomplish what the “dieter” is seeking on a physiological basis.
For the bodybuilder, ALC also helps to increase energy production which can sometimes be low during periods of intense dieting and exercising. With enough acetyl-l-carnitine supplementation, muscles can burn fat and protein for energy instead of glucose.
Theoretically, this should allow for more formation of metabolically active muscle tissue.
L carnitine weight loss supplements are sold as metabolism boosting supplements. This isn’t quite true. Over the “long haul”, yes, you will lose fat and gain muscle. And yes, doing that will increase your metabolic rate. But, see how it is an indirect, rather than a direct metabolism booster?
So, to review and incorporate what you have learned above, the increased burning of alternate fuels (fats) will delay muscle fatigue. It also helps to reduce the onset and accumulation of a glucose metabolism-by-product:lactic acid. It spares glycogen; the stored form of glucose.
We all know muscles are far more “metabolically active” than fat. Therefore, the goal for both the bodybuilder and the dieter is less fat and more muscle.
Lastly, acetyl-l-carnitine MIGHT increase the production of testosterone, helping to boost muscle mass further.
Dosing and timing of l carnitine:
Studies have shown that a L-carnitine-carbohydrates combination has a performance enhancing or ergogenic effect. The “work output” can be increased (according to studies) by about 11%. So, if you’re going to be all scientific about it, for fat loss, you should take L-carnitine weight loss supplement with approximately 60 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates. The best workout whey protein shakes contain that. In other words, what we offer. Not to mention, ours is yummy!
You are doing yourself the same amount of “good” by simply taking your ALC daily to see definite results.
The dosage to “lose fat-gain muscle” is about 2-4 grams of ALC daily.
This is more than the amount needed to increase energy and cognition, but you are totally covered by taking this dose!
