Ingredients to add to your Weight loss smoothie recipes which promote weight loss:
While many of the conventional ingredients appear in smoothies that will support a healthy weight, some are better than others. There are several components you can put into your weight loss smoothies that will boost your weight loss by employing various weight loss mechanisms.
Greek yogurt: This is much higher in protein than “regular yogurt” which will leave your feeling fuller for a longer duration of time. It also has less sugar, if chosen wisely, which is always better for weight loss.
Coconut oil: This superfood keeps you energized, satiated and feeling good. The predominant fats in coconut oil are used by the body for energy as opposed to being stored as fat.
Berries: Any kind of berry is the best choice of fruit for your health including your brain health. Examples are of course the strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry. All of the berries are high in fiber and antioxidants and add a ton of flavor to a smoothie without adding very many calories or sugar. Blueberries have just been scientifically deemed the “best berry” so be sure to add those into all of the weight loss smoothies you can.
Chia seeds: These are packed with protein and fiber to help keep you feeling full and satisfied and they contain numerous healthful nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and antioxidants.
Avocado: These supply ample amounts of healthy fat, which will keep you satiated and satisfied until your next meal. They also contain an array of health promoting vitamins and minerals.
Leafy greens: Greens, like kale, spinach, dandelion, and romaine lettuce, are packed with phytonutrients and are low in calories and high in fiber.
Cinnamon: This amazing spice helps regulate blood sugar levels by improving the metabolism of glucose. This results in a reduction of the amount of excess blood glucose that can be stored as fat.
Tea/water/ice: A fruity, herbal tea is a good substitute for juice. Green tea contains healthful nutrients, including a compound (ECGC) which helps loss due to it’s activity as a metabolism booster, and it has a mild flavor. For a consistency more like a shake, use crushed ice cubes made from the tea to throw into the smoothies.
Ingredients to avoid:
There are plenty of great foods and supplements to put in your smoothies that will give you flavor without excess calories. People assume that any smoothie is a healthy option, but there are some ingredients that should be avoided if you are using smoothies as a weight loss tool. The most important thing you want to avoid in your smoothies is excess sugar.
Even “healthier” sugar from natural sources such as fruit, honey, and maple syrup should be minimized. I would like to say completely avoided and replaced with stevia as this is the healthiest weight loss smoothie sugar substitution. So when you are going through the recipes below please DO keep this in mind. I write these articles knowing that everyone is not a purist as I am but hopefully I can nudge you that way!
Canned fruits or vegetables: These often have added sweeteners and preservatives that increase the number of calories, not to mention toxins. Fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables maintain nutrient content much longer than canned products.
Dairy: Products such as ice cream, frozen yogurt or milk are common ingredients in smoothies, but they are chock full of extra calories, sugar and additives. There are exceptions, such as raw milk and plain, full-fat Greek yogurt, which is low in sugar and high in protein, but most dairy products should be avoided.
Fruit juice: Many contain added sweeteners, and all have lost the fiber of the whole fruit, and are low in nutritional value. If you have a juicer and can put the whole fruit in the juicer and then use what you’ve got-then you can certainly do that.
Sweeteners: If your smoothie tastes very sweet, you are probably over doing it on the sweetener and potentially consuming too much sugar for good diet plans. Stevia is a natural, no-calorie sweetener that you can use as much as you want.
As you work towards your goal with weight loss smoothies, keep in mind that the healthy way to lose weight includes more than just dietary changes. Smoothies provide you with many of the nutrients you need including vitamins, protein, minerals, carbohydrates and good fats. Besides just having a smoothie, make sure that you are eating healthy foods, getting plenty of vegetables, high quality proteins, whole grains, and moderate amounts of fruits in your daily meals.
